The biggest blocker to Supply Chain agility is internal.
My discussions with several supply chain teams in leading companies reveals an uncomfortable truth. Their supply chains can get more agile. They have the capabilities. They know what to do. The blocker is mostly internal.
Is it the fear of unknown? Possibly. Teams who have started on this journey have reaped huge benefits. Will it work in our case? How do we get over the inertia?
My suggestion would be to take a small step and see the results for yourself. Sense the market demand more frequently. Act on the signal more often. Deploy finished goods based on actual demand. Tweak the production schedule based on the latest demand signals.
The smallest of changes in the direction of agility will start delivering results. Especially if applied on the constraint and bottlenecks.
The stockouts will go down. Need for firefighting will reduce. Expediting instances will come down. Flow will improve.
Once you start seeing improvements, double down on your efforts at the bottlenecks and limiting processes.
Agility is not rocket science. Let’s take the first baby step in that direction.
