Do your purchased items get stale with ageing?

We are discussing the risks associated with buying items in bulk to get a discount. We discussed one of the risks, related to the assumption of using up the entire quantity, in the last post.

Let’s discuss the second risk today. When we buy items in bulk, these are consumed over an extended period of time. The inherent assumption is that the last consumed item in the lot would be as good in quality and freshness as the first one.

Is it true? Our personal experience clearly shows that fresh products with short shelf life do lose their quality over time. We are careful in buying fruits, vegetables, milk and bread in small quantities, enough for just the immediate consumption.

What about items with long shelf life? Do they also lose value over time? Of course, they do. The quality of industrial spares like V-belts and gaskets often deteriorates over time. We have also seen retailers struggling to sell older consumer goods.

If you do care about freshness of items at the time of consumption, have a relook at the common practice of buying in bulk at a discount!
