Do you worry about slips between supply planning and execution?

Working with supply chains of so many companies over the past few years, I have noticed that all of them worry about execution of their supply plans. However, the way they approach it differs quite a bit.

Most companies micromanage their supply execution with comprehensive monitoring of all supply actions using control towers. In case of a slip, team members are questioned and asked to improve their compliance in future. In such companies, employees execute their work because they have been asked to do so. They may not agree with the logic and their intuition may point in another direction. Supply chain teams are always stressed.

More progressive companies invest their time in aligning their team members first by explaining the logic and getting their buy-in. They don’t need such elaborate monitoring systems afterwards. Exceptions are escalated by the employees themselves and used to fine tune the planning parameters.
