Are you struggling with too many initiatives?

I have spoken to a lot of supply chain professionals and most of them complain about too many initiatives going on simultaneously in their area. While each of these initiatives looks good in a specific domain, the combination looks quite overwhelming for the team to do justice to each one. How do we resolve it?

My suggestion is to think about the entire end-to-end supply chain as one system, which is meant to serve the customers’ needs. If we are underperforming on the customer relevant KPIs too frequently, resolving it should be the single most important initiative for the business team. We need to analyze the current process, identify the root cause and correct it.

Even if we are the best performing in the industry on those KPIs, we should take initiative to improve it further to gain a bigger competitive edge.

In short, the most important initiative should aim at improving our customer service. All the other initiatives should support it on need basis. Think of Amazon. Their three major initiatives over the years – Prime, FBA and AWS are all sharply focused on their customers.
