Is the IOT data overwhelming your Supply Chain team?

I recently came across a company which had an initial success with their IOT pilot implementation. Encouraged by this success, they decided to extend it to various other machines, hoping to get even bigger gains.

The team now has so much of data flowing in every day that it doesn’t know how to handle it and how to leverage it. They are overwhelmed by the sheer quantum of data.

To make things worse, their pilot implementation is now showing a decline in business benefits.

You would have possibly guessed it by now… They have fallen into the trap of ‘More Data’ to improve their supply chain performance. It is one of the ‘Seductive Seven’ explained by Kristen Cox and Yishai Aishlag in their pathbreaking book ‘Decorating the Fish’.

Before asking for more data, we must answer the two critical questions… What are we losing by not having this data (current limitation)? How will this data help us in improving the overall system performance (leverage)?

If we can’t articulate these two aspects clearly, we are possibly falling into the Data Trap.
