Supply Chain transformation is not just a technology initiative.
I have seen many leaders approach their supply chain transformation project as a technology initiative. They firmly believe that new technology should drive the transformation. In many cases, it is led by their technology head. These teams often struggle in their endeavour and fail to get business benefits from the transformation project.
I would recommend that supply chain transformation should start with identifying who our primary customers are, what their primary needs are, and how well we are meeting these needs. This analysis is likely to reveal many gaps.
These gaps are normally caused by our policies, processes, practices, beliefs and assumptions. We must revisit the ones which are coming in the way and change them. If it requires a technology upgrade, we should embark on it. However, we should remember that technology is only an enabler, not the prime mover of the transformation project.
