5S is a pre-requisite for high quality.

I have come across several companies who have undertaken large scale quality improvement projects. Some of these involve sophisticated quality inspection processes and tools. However, many of them have failed to see any improvement in their product quality. Why is it that these efforts and investments often fail to deliver benefits?

My experience suggests that quality projects require an improvement mindset in employees. I was shocked to see a world renowned company, willing to undertake quality improvement projects, having a slippery shop floor, spillage from machines, material stacked haphazardly on the floor.

Quality improvement starts with the famous 5S technique. Unless we clean up the shop floor and make it safe for people to operate, it is unreasonable to expect them to focus on quality improvement.

Implement 5S and you will see a marked change in the mindset of employees. They can then contribute effectively to quality improvement initiatives.
