Flow principles would help in improving the vaccination experience.
The end-to-end vaccination process is actually a supply chain process which can be improved using the Flow principles. The process comprises of procuring input materials for vaccines, manufacturing, distributing to various vaccination centres and finally serving the consumers.
It appears that the current constraint is in the production process, which can manufacture about 25-30 lac vaccines in a day. Until we resolve this constraint and produce more, we should run the post-production supply chain at this rate of flow.
Administering more than 25-30 lac doses in a day violates the flow principle, resulting in stockouts on subsequent days. It is prudent to distribute the production quantity to various centres in a steady manner so that each centre can administer a pre-determined uniform number of doses every day. If the supply is lumpy, the extra quantity should be stored as a buffer to be used till the next supply arrives.
Consumer appointments should also be restricted to these numbers, so that people can book their appointments in advance and experience a smooth vaccination process.
