Does intuition play a role in Supply Chain improvements?

We have a divided opinion on this topic. Some supply chain teams mention time and again that a lot of their improvement ideas come out of intuition, whereas many others depend more on established logic. How much importance should we give to intuition?

How do we develop the right intuition? As Dr. Goldratt said, we can depend on our intuition only if we are emotionally invested in the business. That’s why many team members have very strong intuition, which turn out to be correct.

However, being emotionally invested is not the only requirement. We must put guard rails to check whether intuition is in the overall direction of solution. We must pass our intuitive ideas through logic before implementation. Logic will check whether the idea eliminates UDEs or not, as well as whether it leads to any new UDEs.

The combination of Emotion-Intuition-Logic works very well in improving the overall Supply Chain.
