One Way streets are such a delight for motorists!
Cities struggling with traffic congestions often resort to the time tested initiative of making certain streets open to only one-way traffic. The impact can be seen immediately. Traffic starts flowing smoothly, congestions disappear and accidents generally go down.
It’s quite similar on the shop floor. If the products flow through various operations in a single direction, from input materials to finished goods, throughput goes up, waiting times come down and orders are delivered faster.
Unless…
A vehicle comes in the wrong direction! It not only disrupts the flow, it could as well lead to new bottlenecks and chances of accidents.
We experience similar phenomenon on the shop floor when a defective item is produced and it has to be sent back for rework. It disrupts the smooth flow of products on the shop floor, creates bottlenecks, extends waiting time and delays fulfilment of customer orders.
Flow improvements work well with ‘First Time Right’ operations.
