Does your goal challenge the underlying assumptions in Supply Chain?

This is the time of the year when Supply Chain teams work on the goal for next year. What I usually find in my discussion with supply chain leaders is that the goals are not challenging enough. The team knows how to reach it with a few improvements here and there, combined with better discipline in execution.

Is that the purpose of setting goals? That it should be attainable with minor improvements.

I don’t think so. Goals should be really challenging, with the teams finding it impossible to achieve with the current thinking. It should force us to challenge the deep-rooted supply chain assumptions.

Companies who don’t challenge these assumptions find it increasingly difficult to compete with their competitors who do.

The choice is yours…
