Quality is not free.
We have been conditioned since our childhood to think that higher quality is going to cost more. It is now so deeply ingrained in our minds that we pick and choose only the most urgent quality improvement projects, based on the budgets available.
This paradigm was shattered by Phil Crosby in 1979 when he published his seminal book ‘Quality Is Free’, which provided a different perspective to look at quality improvement and opened the doors for many more important quality improvement projects without increasing cost.
We have come a long way since then and realized that quality improvement can actually save a lot of money. I am not referring to just the reduction in cost of after-sales service or warranties and claims. Quality improvement initiatives focused on hidden waste reduction actually save direct material cost as well as production costs.
Would love to hear from you on your experience in implementing such projects…
