A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
It’s an important lesson that we learnt in our childhood, but do we use it in our work life? Many supply chain transformation projects get delayed because of the inertia in taking the first step. When is the right time to take it?
Most improvement projects require a series of interventions to be undertaken in a particular order. I have seen quite a few supply chain professionals detailing out each leg of the journey to have visibility of the full plan before commencing the project. This amount of detailing before beginning the project is not only unnecessary, but also counter productive.
My suggestion is to agree on the direction of solution and broadly outline various legs of the journey. Detailing should be done for only the first leg. It not only helps an early start, but also permits mid-course correction based on the crucial feedback obtained during the implementation. Unless we build this strong feedback loop in project execution, subsequent legs may remain distant from reality when we execute them. Forecasting reality so much in advance is bound to induce errors!
Are you ready to take the first step on various pending projects?
