Are you playing solo or in an orchestra?
Supply Chain is a team game. It not only encompasses functions like Planning, Procurement, Manufacturing and Distribution, but also extends on either side to include vendors, transporters, distributors and retailers. How we play this game is a major determinant of supply chain performance.
If each function focuses on its own performance metrics, it will lead to chaos as the necessary coordination will be lost. The music will sound out of tune.
If the players play like an orchestra, the music will be harmonious.
However, an orchestra does need a conductor… all the players follow her commands. Who is the conductor in a supply chain?
It should be the consumers, who actually control the speed of flow in the supply chain, unless there is an internal constraint which throttles the flow.
