Consistency in flow has a significant impact on the overall Supply Chain performance.

A major lever for improving the performance of supply chains is to improve the flow, for which TOC offers a good framework and a set of tools. However, teams often miss out an important insight that variability in machine output itself causes turbulence and restricts the overall flow, especially in systems with dependencies.

How do we reduce this variability in output? There are two techniques which help us in this regard. The first one is ‘Six Sigma’ to control the inherent variability in machine output. The second one is ‘Total Productive Maintenance’ (TPM), which improves reliability of these machines.

A judicious mix of TOC, Six Sigma and TPM can lead to a significant increase in flow and a quantum jump in supply chain performance.
