Can you explain your Supply Chain logic to a 10-year old?
It’s the acid test of how simple the logic is. Supply Chain is not rocket science. It works beautifully on certain well-thought out heuristics. Easy to explain. Easy to understand. Easy to get buy-in from the team. Easy to stick to, if the immediate results are good (they will be if it is well thought-out).
Companies often complicate the logic. Complex optimisations are difficult to explain. Also difficult to understand. Difficult to get team buy-in. Difficult to sustain.
Let the day-to-day planning logic be simple. How much to move across nodes? How to set dynamic inventory buffers? How to derive production schedule? How to schedule vendor deliveries?
Teams should be able to explain it to a 10-year old. Without using complex formulae. With simple illustrations.
If your current logic is more complicated than that, have a relook. Simplify it. Let me know if you need help.
