Leave Supply Chain execution to the front line people.
Supply Chain teams carry out two important activities on a regular basis. The first one is done by planners to create procurement, production, dispatch plans to meet the emerging demand. The second one is done by line people to execute these plans flawlessly.
I have seen planners getting deeply involved in execution… micromanaging with the line people, taking calls on their behalf and solving their issues. It happens if the responsibilities have not been defined well or if the line people have not been empowered to decide in case of deviations.
Let’s look at the current processes to ensure clarity of action and empower the front line for day-to-day execution. Of course, exceptions need to be escalated to the planners for tweaking the plans, but these should be few. If the exceptions are far too high, we must have a hard look at the policies, processes and practices currently in use.
