What is constraining your organisation from reaching its goal?
This question looks simple, but the fact remains that most teams find it difficult to answer it in simple terms. If you are part of a for-profit organisation and the goal is to make more money, now as well as in the future, the constraint can be in any one of the following four areas.
If the supply side is streamlined and we are able to fulfil all customer demand in time, the constraint is in the market.
If we have more orders than what we can supply, and the non-supply is due to capacity issues, the constraint is in production capacity.
If we have more orders and adequate capacity but one of the input materials is in short supply, the constraint is in materials.
If we have all these available in plenty but are unable to buy materials due to cash crunch, the constraint is cash.
Identifying the system constraint is the first step in the improvement process.
My suggestion is to take this first step now.
