How do we design Resilient Supply Chains?
The topic of resilient supply chains was discussed at the ISCM conference a couple of days back. What struck me the most was varied understanding of the word ‘resilience’, even ‘disruption’.
How do we define disruption? Is it the big events, like Covid-19, Suez canal blockage, Red Sea crisis, Semiconductors shortage, which are in the news making headlines?
Or is this definition of disruption too narrow? What about truckers strike, floods, fire at a vendor’s factory, labour shortage, etc.? These may be smaller disruptions but their combined impact can be much bigger than the impact of big disruptions.
Designing supply chains for resilience should start with the definition of disruption. Design options for different types and levels of disruption are likely to vary.
Would love to hear from you how you have defined disruption in your supply chain and what measures have you put in place to mitigate it…
