What’s common in the goals of your supply chain team members?
I have seen the goals of various supply chain team members across several organisations. In most cases, the top two goals for each individual pertain to her specific job responsibilities. For example, purchase people would have goals on input material cost, production team on efficient manufacturing operations, logistics team on freight and warehousing cost control.
Do you think this pattern of goal setting encourages teamwork? For example, if OTIF is threatened and a consignment needs to be expedited through express freight, do you think the logistics team would initiate that action?
Functional goal setting is passé. Organizations should instead encourage their teams to serve the consumers better through common goals on higher product availability and product freshness.
If we are aiming for supply chain excellence, the top two goals for each member of the supply chain team should be set as product availability and product freshness.
