What can Supply Chain professionals learn from ‘smooth drivers’?

All of us come across a range of drivers. Some are rash and accident-prone, we wouldn’t like to be their co-passengers. Most are safe but we do experience bumps, jerks and sharp turns while travelling with them.

However, there is a select set of drivers who drive very smoothly, irrespective of traffic and road conditions. It’s a pleasure riding with them. No jerks (even when they brake), no bumps (even on speed breakers or ditches) and no sharp turns. What’s the secret of their smooth driving? And what can we learn from them as supply chain professionals?

First and foremost, they seem to read the minds of other drivers surrounding them… in front, behind and sideways. They would know if the car following you is planning to overtake you. They would know if the car in front is planning to change lanes (even if it hasn’t signalled yet) and halt ahead.

The smooth drivers are also good at reading the situation, and be flexible in terms of overtaking or falling behind. They are quick to change their outlook if the situation changes.

These three qualities are akin to demand sensing, flexibility and responsiveness of supply chains.

Would you like to drive your supply chain with bumps, jerks and sharp turns? Or would you like to drive it smoothly?

The choice is yours…
