Handling diverse functions early in the career helps supply chain professionals in developing a broader perspective.

Many supply chain professionals would like to specialize in a particular field. While specialization helps in getting deeper expertise in the specific domain, pursuing it too early limits the overall business perspective.

My experience in mentoring several supply chain professionals suggests that handling a range of supply chain functions does help. Some companies have a stated policy that managers working in supply chain should rotate through manufacturing, procurement, logistics, demand planning and supply planning. It gives them a broader perspective and helps in team building as well. Added exposure to sales, marketing, IT and finance is even better.
