Supply Chain transformation should begin with process streamlining.

Several companies start their supply chain transformation by implementing a specific technology currently in vogue. In some cases, it is visibility through IOT. In other cases, it is inventory optimization using planning optimizers.

Most of such transformation projects don’t end up giving their projected benefits, leading to further time and effort spent on debugging and trying to understand the cause of such underperformance.

In my opinion, supply chain transformation should always begin with redesign of the current planning and execution processes. Tweaking these processes often gives 80-90% of the overall potential benefits, with the current team and IT infrastructure. Balance 10-20% benefits may require certain added automation and advanced tools.

When was the last time you had a critical look at the design of your supply chain planning and execution processes? The time to do it is now!
