Can a system operate without constraints?
When we ask industry professionals regarding what is constraining their overall business, the response ranges from a blank look to a state of confusion. They are unable to visualize where the system constraint lies.
The fact remains that every system operates with certain constraints. If not, it would produce infinite profit. When people think of constraints, they often confine themselves to their own sphere of operation and talk about local constraints.
In reality, every system has a multitude of constraints. Many of these constraints are at a local level, affecting the performance of only a part of the system. Their impact on the overall business may or may not be significant.
However, there exists an overall system limiting constraint, which affects the performance of the overall business in a very significant manner.
