Work expands to fill the lead time available.
Agility focuses on reducing lead time to fulfil customer requirements, while improving the customer service measures of product availability and freshness. It is a continuous improvement process with further room for improvement at any stage.
However, the improvement gets institutionalized only when we do promise faster delivery to our customers. It is a vital requirement to sustain the agile processes. Else the improvements are temporary and regress back to the earlier ways of working.
I have seen certain supply chain teams carrying out good improvements in making their processes more agile but falling shy of promising faster delivery to their customers. In such cases, the benefits of agility are short lived.
If we wish to sustain our agility journey, let’s drive it by promising faster deliveries.
