Learning Supply Chain Agility from the best – The Heart!

Supply Chain agility is not a new concept. It has been around for millions, possibly billions of years. We can see the most agile at work all around us. All we need is open eyes and a perceptive mind.

Let’s start with the Heart. It’s the Constraint in our body. It supplies blood to all the organs to fulfil their needs of oxygen and nutrients. Heart exemplifies the Flow principle. Let me explain.

Heart works to maintain the requisite flow of blood. If we go for a brisk walk or a jog, our body needs higher flow rate of blood. Does the blood supply increase based on our jogging schedule, say 6-7 in the morning? No, it has nothing to do with the plan, it goes up only when we actually start jogging.

Should we still produce and distribute products based on monthly sales forecast? Or should we sense demand to inform various supply actions?

What does your heart say?
