Let’s imagine two supply chains, comparable in all respects in terms of product availability, freshness, assortment and cost when demand is normal with reasonable variations. Their supply lead times are also comparable.
However, there is just one difference between these two. When the demand shifts significantly, either a spike or a slump, their responses differ.
The first supply chain doesn’t know how to handle such huge variations from forecast. Their teams panic and get into a firefighting mode. They may salvage some of the additional demand during spikes but most of the opportunity is lost.
The second supply chain behaves quite differently. When the demand spikes, the demand signal triggers additional supplies on the relevant route, additional production, and expediting of pending orders with vendors. All the segments respond fast and comprehensively. No panic, no firefighting, no stress. As if nothing has happened.
