There are two distinct needs to improve supply chain performance.
Supply chain improvement projects are undertaken for two different reasons. One is, of course, to improve its performance as experienced by customers and consumers. These are a few vital improvements focused on the leverage points in the supply chain. It needs a lot of management attention and involves a limited number of employees. TOC practitioners are absolutely right in saying that we should focus on such projects and not fritter away the management attention on other possible improvement areas.
The other reason for performance improvement is to give an opportunity for all the employees to engage with the company in its improvement efforts. It does help in shaping their mindset towards improvement, besides giving them some practical experience of improvement projects. The key here is not to ask for management attention. Kaizen works on this principle and helps in bringing an improvement culture to the entire organization.
Next time we work on supply chain improvement ideas, let’s keep both these requirements in mind.
