Some of your customers may ask for difficult commitments.

Successful companies with a well-run supply chain often face this challenge. Since they consistently meet customer expectations and offer high level of OTIF, a few customers may demand even tighter commitments while maintaining the OTIF level. These could include shorter lead times, smaller MOQs, accepting last minute changes in orders, etc. Should you accept these requests?

Accepting such requests would indeed put the entire supply chain under stress, which is actually a good nudge for sharpening the current supply chain capabilities. It would force you to improve your demand sensing mechanism, make the backend more flexible and responsive.

Most companies resist such proposals of their customers. A few progressive companies, with POOGI (Process of Ongoing Improvement) firmly in place, accept it immediately.

Who do you think would win in future?
