Supply chains are getting a lot of management attention these days.
I have heard many supply chain leaders boast that their function is drawing considerably higher management attention. They also mention that the top management is spending much more time in reviewing the supply chain performance, some even say that they have a daily review meeting with the business head.
Is it a good thing?
We should remember that top management time is a precious organizational resource, which is often the main constraint in accelerating business growth. The more time they spend in consumer insights, product innovation, business model redesign, relationship building, the better it is for the organization. Of course, they should also spend time on supply chain, but it is better spent on improvement ideas… making it more responsive, flexible and consumer focused. Spending time on regular reviews is underutilization of the constraint.
Let’s make our supply chains reliable and consistently high performers so that the top management doesn’t need to review it so often.
