Should we make New Year resolutions for our Supply Chain?
This is the time of the year when we see New Year resolutions floating around, from our friends and colleagues. These are made in full earnest, with a firm intention to improve our operations in the new year.
The question is… Should we first step back a little, look at the resolutions made last year and list down the actions taken during the year? Did we achieve what we set out to do? If we look around, we find many instances of forgetting these resolutions within a few weeks of making them. It is unfortunate but true. Why is it so?
My experience suggests that many of these resolutions actually seek to improve only the local optima and an effort to improve them doesn’t necessarily improve the overall business performance, leading to a new set of resolutions next year.
On the other hand, if we have identified the business Goal and moved in the direction of achieving it, the resolutions are unlikely to change every year. For there is no end to improvement, and the true Goal, if set properly, can never be achieved. It’s like the North Star which guides us in taking the right actions throughout the journey…
Let’s resolve to clarify the Goal for our business and focus on actions which take us closer to it…
Happy New Year!
