Principles of Evolution hold the key to Supply Chain transformation.
Darwin is right. Just as organisms have learned to evolve continually, Supply Chains also need a similar process of continually adapting to the environment they operate in. Supply chains survive and thrive when the change is continuous instead of a knee-jerk reaction.
We have seen umpteen cases of big one-time transformation efforts struggling to survive. What we need instead are just two mechanisms to focus on.
The first is situational awareness. How is consumer behaviour changing? How is the marketplace evolving? Is there a demand shift for our products? Are we able to meet the continually changing requirements of our consumers? Demand Sensing comes in handy in this regard.
The second is awareness of our capabilities to adapt. Are we flexible to change or are we rigid? How long do we take to respond? Flexibility and Responsiveness of the backend operations come into play here.
All we need for supply chain transformation is just an adaptive evolution of our supply chains. Focus on demand sensing, improve flexibility and respond faster to changes in demand.
