Learning agility from the martial artists…

Success in martial arts is built on agility. We can learn a lot from the martial artists by keenly observing them.

Their situational awareness is of the highest order. They can sense the opponent, even if they can’t see him at times. They can sense not only the physical presence, but also his mind and the forthcoming moves. Demand sensing is built on the same principles.

Having sensed the situation, they plan their next action continually. Not on a periodic basis. Continual planning is the most agile and takes into account the latest situation. Increasing the frequency of planning takes us in that direction.

Their execution latency is close to zero. In fact, continual planning and execution happen in tandem. These two processes cease to be sequential. These also feed into each other in a two-way feedback loop. We have a lot to learn from them to improve the supply chain responsiveness.

If you are contemplating making your supply chain more agile, think of the martial artists. The improvement areas will reveal themselves!
