Conflict between Service, Quality and Cost is real.

Supply Chain leaders often ask me ‘How should we prioritize between Service, Quality and Cost?’ And my answer has remained the same.

Framing it as an ‘OR’ problem restricts our thinking and we are forced to choose among the three. We should instead frame it as an ‘AND’ problem… we want to improve all the three. Simultaneously.

Let’s see through the repercussions.

If we can improve service, offer better quality and lower cost, who would object to such a solution? It’s a real win-win-win. We must strive to find that solution and not leave it half way through. There are dozens of options where you can improve one by compromising the other two parameters. Do we really want such a ‘short cut’ solution?

How do we find such a solution? If we look at the root causes of poor service, poor quality and higher cost, there will always be at least one common root cause. That’s the lever we should pull and latch on to it. Believe me, it’s a gold mine!

Have you experienced the ‘Aha’ moment when you realise that improved service, better quality and lower cost can all be achieved. Simultaneously. And the solution is just hiding in plain sight.

Would love to hear from you…
