How to approach Supply Chain transformation projects?

Many companies undertake Supply Chain transformation projects and find them expensive, time consuming and effort intensive. Moreover, quite a few of them say that the returns were not commensurate with the efforts.

How do we make such projects easier to implement, enjoyable by the team and rewarding for the organisation?

In my opinion, supply chain transformation should start with the clear objective of improving consumer facing parameters of product availability, freshness and wider assortment. Once the project direction is defined, we can break the project in a series of sequential steps starting from the consumer end. Each step builds on the previous steps and moves us closer to the goal.

We can see a visible improvement on all the parameters with each step, which motivates the team to move on without any external prodding.
