Are you visiting the Gemba often?

When we come across a problem, our normal tendency is to think about the possible root causes and work out a possible solution. While it may be effective in some cases, we possibly leave out a lot many more alternatives unexplored.

What has worked for me is to visit the Gemba (place of action) in such cases and just observe the process with full concentration for quite some time. It generates so many hypotheses and alternate solutions in a short period of say 30 minutes that I find it absolutely amazing.

The knowledge we gain by visiting Gemba can’t be substituted by a brainstorming session or a logical analysis of the problem.

When you visit Gemba, your mind works out many intuitive alternatives, which can then be analysed with logic.
