Erroneous assumptions can make your supply chain look very complex.

Western astronomers struggled to predict the path of various planets for a very long time. As seen from the Earth, some of the planets appear to move in retrograde direction at times, which was extremely complex to model. At the root of this complexity was their basic assumption of a Geocentric solar system, where Earth was considered at the centre. This assumption was corrected much later, in the 16th century, by Copernicus.

Aryabhatta, an Indian astronomer, considered Sun at the centre of the solar system and derived elliptical orbits of various planets using simple mathematics. Apparent retrograde movements were easily explained by this model. This happened about thousand years before Copernicus and gave birth to the concept of a Heliocentric solar system.

A simple wrong assumption can make the whole solar system look complex to understand. Correcting that assumption simplifies the whole system and makes it much easier to understand and model.

Supply chain practitioners, who are bogged down by complexities of their supply chain are possibly making a few wrong assumptions. Let’s correct these and enjoy the simplicity of a seemingly complex supply chain.
