Are you waiting for the full roadmap of a Supply Chain improvement initiative?

I know of many supply chain leaders who don’t start an improvement initiative till the entire roadmap of implementation is clearly worked out. Is it a wise thing to do?

Since the market context keeps evolving, the full detailed roadmap of any improvement initiative is neither available at the beginning nor reliable. It is also prudent to carry out mid-course corrections and adapt the improvement journey as we go along.

However, what is absolutely essential is clear objectives and the direction of solution. For example, the objectives can be improving stock availability for consumers as well as product freshness on the retail shelves. The direction of solution can be through improved demand sensing, dynamic replenishment mechanism, higher flexibility in the constrained part of the supply chain, and faster response in the bottleneck operations.

Once the objectives and direction of solution are clear, we can very well start the improvement initiative by taking the first few steps and evolve the next ones as we go along.
