Start small.
Supply Chain teams often get overwhelmed by the seemingly enormous change and complexity involved in switching their supply chain processes from Forecast driven to truly Demand driven.
The inertia often wins against deployment of a Demand Sensing engine to understand demand patterns, setting dynamic inventory buffers, and establishing a pull based replenishment system.
The actual implementation is much simpler and the process is enjoyable as it eliminates firefighting to a large extent. However, proof of the pudding is in eating.
Teams can start small and scale in stages. Let me explain. You can take your biggest brand and take just the fast moving skus. Move them to a Demand Driven model. Their availability will improve, inventory will come down and consumers will get fresher products. The rest of the product portfolio will likely continue to perform at the earlier levels.
Starting small does wonders to team’s enthusiasm and makes it easier to switch other products as well.
