How should we facilitate change management for Supply Chain initiatives?

Most supply chain initiatives require significant change management efforts. Many of these initiatives involve external consultants or service providers. Let’s understand the nuances involved in change management.

Change management must address all the aspects of change… Positives and negatives of making the change, and positives and negatives of maintaining status quo.

My observation across various teams indicates that consultants or service providers typically highlight only two of these aspects – positives of making the change, and negatives of maintaining status quo. This depicts only half of the picture and immediately invokes reaction from the supply chain team. They point out the missing pieces – positives of maintaining status quo, and negatives of making the change. Subsequent discussion often turns into an argument.

My suggestion is for the consultants or service providers to paint the full picture, covering the positives and negatives of making the change, as well as of maintaining status quo. It is best done in a joint workshop with the supply chain team.

TOC has an excellent methodology called ‘The Change Matrix’ to address this issue!
