How do you respond to surprises in your Supply Chain?

Supply Chain professionals encounter numerous surprises in their daily planning and execution. Many of these are quite significant. A few positive surprises may result in a windfall improvement in performance, whereas certain negative surprises could spell disaster! How do the teams respond to these surprises?

The most common response is to take credit for the positive surprises and assign the negative ones to external factors! Some other teams are more objective and assign both the positive and negative ones to unknown factors. Both these types of behaviour miss out on the immense learning possible from these events.

Every surprise is an opportunity for learning if we analyse its underlying root cause and use it to leverage the positive ones and mitigate the impact of the negatives. If we do it consistently for every major surprise, our supply chain will become not only more robust but even antifragile.
