Supply Chains are run by people.

Supply Chain leaders often focus on technology for performance improvement. They are so focused on selecting the right technology and implementing it that they forget that these have to be run by their people.

Many improvements can come by if we just focus on our people and help them carry out their jobs well. Some of these are quite simple. Let me illustrate with some examples.

Are we using their brains for making improvements or are we just using their hands for execution? Are they empowered to take decisions within guardrails or are they tied down by bureaucracy? In case of performance slips, do we hold our employees responsible or do we look for process deficiencies?

If we let our employees do their jobs in the best way they can and encourage them to suggest and implement improvements, it helps in creating an improvement culture. Technology implementation then becomes a lot easier and more effective.
