Improvement is an ongoing process.

Observing supply chain teams of companies on the first day of a new fiscal year gives a lot of insights on the strength, resilience and design of their supply chains. A lot of teams felt quite relaxed yesterday after the herculean effort in making stocks available for push sale on the last day of the year. They did deserve a bit of relaxing.

Very few teams actually analysed where they fell short in stock deployment and the underlying reasons for these stockouts. Such an analysis is best done immediately when events of the month end are fresh in their mind. The analysis reveals where planning parameters need to be tweaked and where the supply chain needs capability improvement in terms of higher flexibility and faster response. Of course, detailed analysis is feasible only if the stockouts are few in number.

If the stockouts were widespread across products and geographies, we need to look into the supply chain design itself.

When was the last time you critically evaluated your supply chain design?
